Austin City Limits Music & Arts Festival

The Austin City Limits Festival is an annual music and arts festival taking place in Zilker Park, Austin, Texas. The festival first appeared in 2002 and was named after the U.S. PBS network's Austin City Limits TV show. The 2013 festival takes place over two weekends on October 4th - 6th and October 11th - 13th.

Rising in popularity and the ability to attract headline performers the Austin City Limits Festival has grown to mirror the history of the legendary PBS TV music show. The festival was first staged in 2002 in Zilker Park, a 46 acre park in the Texas town of Austin; like the TV show the festival began by showcasing talent from Texas and the surrounding areas before growing to highlight artists from around the world in various musical genres. The initial festival was a two day music festival before switching to a three day format during the following years.

By 2006 the acts had switched to those with a global fanbase, including The Flaming Lips who were followed to Austin the next year by The White Stripes and Amy Winehouse. A number of bands have appeared at the festival who also perform on the TV show, such as The Dave Matthews Band and Coldplay. As the festival has grown the artists performing have also grown to include The Eagles and Muse.

Because the festival is held in one of Austin's green spaces local food suppliers operate in the food court and the festival is open to children with specialized areas for children to play. Austin City Limits has previously been the winner of the best festival of the year award in the U.S. and has grown in 2013 to become a six day festival.

At the 2013 festival the tradition of including reformed rock bands in the lineup with The Cure and Depeche Mode amongst the headliners. With a large number of well respected acts from Europe and the U.K. also performing, including Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand. The eclectic mix of bands performing at Austin City Limits is rounded out with the inclusion of performers from other genres like country artist Eric Church and Greensky Bluegrass.
