2011 was the 79th season for the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the first year that they missed the playoffs since 2007. The had made several noteworthy changes in personnel during the offseason. Stan McDermott, the defensive coordinator, and Rory Segrest, the defensive line coach, were fired. Jim Washburn was given the defensive line coaching position. Juan Castillo was moved from offensive line coach to the defensive line coach. Howard Mudd was given the offensive line position. Several other coaches moved to other teams when their contracts expired. Akeem Jordan and Michael Vick were the only free agents to sign and play with the Eagles. There was controversy over signing Vick because of a criminal conviction. Phillip Hunt, Jason Babin, Cullen Jenkins and Vince Young were signed and put on the active roster. Eleven players were drafted. In preseason play, Philadelphia won three of four games. Regular season results were not as impressive. The team won eight of sixteen games.

2012 marked the 80th year for the Eagles. They won all of their preseason games. However, it was the worst regular season for quite some time as they won only four games. Andy Reid, the head coach, was fired at the end of the season. The free agents signed in 2012 were Antonio Dixon, King Dunlap, Derek Landri and Evan Mathis. Of their nine draft picks that were acquired, eight of them made the roster.

That feat had been accomplished by only six other teams. The last team to reach that benchmark in the NFC East division was the Washington Redskins in 2000. Philadelphia was the division champion eleven times. They were league champions three times. Those years were 1948, 1949, and 1960. The have appeared in two Super Bowls but have never won. The Houston Texans and the New York Jets have never beaten the Eagles.
